ELEVENTH ANNUAL CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS.

The 11th annual celebrations were held at the Thorncliffe Park Banquet Hall.  Canada Day and the Independence Day of the United States of America were celebrated together in Toronto for the first time.

Michael Prue, Memeber of Provincial Parliament for Beaches East York was the Keynote Speaker and Award Recipient.  Michael Prue's name has become synonymous with East York. He started as Councillor in 1988, Mr. Prue quickly grew into his role as a man of the people. Although his roles and titles may have changed as the years progressed, Mr. Prue remains as an East York icon. Through years of change as Councillor and Mayor of East York and later, Councillor of the City of Toronto, his commitment has never wavered and he continues to be an effective and eloquent voice for the people of his riding and province.

Mr. Prue was presented with a plaque and John Perry's sculpture of a school of whales  The inscription on the plaque recognized him for his "long outstanding public service as Mayor and MPP" and his courageous stand on difficult issues"

Another plaque was presented to Mr. Prue by Mr. Abdulhaq Ingar of the Islamic Society of Toronto.

Mr. Nauman Khan, Anchor and Reporter for OMNI News-South Asian Edition, was the emcee for the evening.

Two cakes, one for Canada's birthday with the Canadian flag and the second one with the American flag, were cut to celebrate the occasions.

Dilshaan Panjwani sang both National Anthems at the start and at the stroke of midnight.  It has become a tradition for the Association to be the first ones in the country to celebrate Canada Day..
