THE ASSOCIATION OF PROGRESSIVE MUSLIMS OF CANADA'S SCHOLARSHIP FUND AT TRENT UNIVERSITY

The Scholarship Fund has been officially in place at Trent University since July 2018. Once the Association has raised the $25,000 needed for our Scholarship, Trent University will convert the fund into the Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada Scholarship.

The scholarship will be open to domestic undergraduate students of all faiths and cultures and will be merit based (80 percent and above). The $25,000 or whatever amount the fund grows to will be held in perpetuity and the scholarship will be paid out using the interest earned on the principal.

Scholarships of $25,000 pay out $1000 per annum to the recipient and if the fund grows to $50,000, two APMC scholarships can be given each year.

Scholarship recipients are asked to write a letter to the scholarship donor thanking them for the scholarship and telling them a little bit about themselves and how the money will assist them in their studies.

Trent University has the distinction of being the #1 undergraduate university in Ontario (Maclean's Rankings) and #3 in Canada  (Maclean’s Rankings) and it has been a special place for students for over 50 years now.

People say you reward what you value and since the APMC was founded, its members have worked hard to prepare young people to get involved in all aspects of Canadian life by participating and fulfilling civic duties and obligations at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.

The future leaders of our country and our world are those young people who are in Trent University classrooms today.

The Honorable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women; the Honorable John Horgan, Premier of British Columbia; Jennifer May Alice Loten, Ambassador to the Organization of American States; the Honorable Laurie Peters, High Commissioner of Canada to Jamaica; Dr. James Orbinski, Doctors Without Borders; Yan Martell, writer and author of Life of Pi; Don Tapscott, author and business leader; and Mani Haghighi, Iranian filmmaker are all Trent University Graduates.

Any donation towards the Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada Scholarship Fund will be greatly appreciated and will make a difference.

How to Donate to the Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada Scholarship Fund

Anyone who wants to contribute to the fund via cheque can send it to Allison Grierson, Donations Coordinator, Mackenzie House, Trent University, 1600 West Bank Drive, Peterborough, K9L 0G2.

To give online, donors simply need to go to www.trentu.ca/give page and once there, go to One-time Gift and then look for Fund Description. In the box, please enter "progressive muslims" and the scholarship link will appear and you can click on it.  You need not choose the "category".

All you do after that is fill in the blanks and follow the prompts to complete the donation. You can give via credit card on the online donation page so it is very straightforward.

Tax receipts will be issued for both cheque and online donation processes.

Donor Recognition

Any donations of $5000 or more will be recognized on the donor wall in the new Trent University Student Centre.

As highlighted above, all donors will receive a tax receipt for income tax purposes. You can give any amount you want to and can even $50.00 or $100.00..

Next Steps

We already have $12,000.00 in actual donations and commitments to the Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada Scholarship Fund so that is a great start.

We need to raise the rest of the money as soon as possible so we can give out a scholarship in 2020.

Trent University is very excited about this new partnership with the Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada .

Please feel free to contact President Mobeen Khaja or Allison Grierson, Trent University Donations Coordinator, at 705-748-1601 or via email at allisongrierson@trentu.ca if you have any questions.
